LGBTQ+ representation in STEM

June is Pride Month, so we wanted to explore this important topic within STEM.  Historically, LGBTQ+ individuals have been underrepresented in STEM fields and have faced certain challenges. But recent years have brought positive change – with growing visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals, and increased advocacy and support networks.

Support organisations

STEM professionals can join established groups such as oSTEM (Out in STEM) and NOGLSTP (National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals). Pride in STEM, a UK charity run by LGBTQIA+ scientists and engineers, also provides networking opportunities, support, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ professionals and students. Aside from these dedicated organisations, many companies are implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives to improve the representation and support of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Role models

While it is an underrepresented group, there are prominent LGBTQ+ scientists, engineers and technologists who have become role models by inspiring others to pursue careers in STEM. Lynn Conway made significant contributions to computer architecture and microelectronics, but she faced discrimination as a transgender woman. By openly sharing her identity, she helped challenge stereotypes and encourage inclusivity. Eventually she became a prominent advocate for transgender rights and diversity in engineering and technology.

Continued challenges

While positive steps have been made, there are still challenges facing the LGBTQ+ community within STEM fields, including a lack of inclusive policies and retention issues, with some LGBTQ+ individuals leaving the sector due to hostile work environments or lack of support. Work is underway to tackle these early on – adding LGBTQ+ topics into STEM education, and delivering mentorship programmes to help LGBTQ+ early-career professionals bridge the gap between education and industry.

Our Pride

Continued advocacy, support, and policy changes are essential for fostering an environment where everyone can thrive. At ICRGU and Robert Gordon University, we want you to embrace your true self. Check out some of the voices of RGU’s LGBTQ+ community.
