Diving into the Hackathon Scene: My RGU Hack Adventure
Hi, I’m Zuhaib – a Computing student here at ICRGU. I recently took part in Robert Gordon University’s hackathon event. Check out my experience below!
Last weekend marked my debut in the hackathon arena at the most recent RGU Hack event, where I aimed to put my coding skills to the test. My course at ICRGU is Computer Science, so this event was a perfect match for my interests and career goals. Not to mention it was free and a great way to meet new people!
The Project Challenge
Our team embarked on a distinctive project: developing a cost-effective car capable of running smoothly for the next five years. The dataset, provided by Global E&C, posed a formidable challenge with its 98,000 entries! Our initial approach involved utilising a Python library to try to cleanse the data of inaccuracies and unneeded values. To do this, we developed a pretty sophisticated machine learning model that analysed the dataset and delivered the desired outcomes!
Workshops and RGU Support
Alongside ensuring that we had plenty of snacks and pizza, the RGU support crew curated a series of engaging workshops throughout the hackathon – covering diverse topics such as AI, web development, and even an introduction from RGU Innovation about presentation skills. These workshops proved so helpful and provided practical insights, particularly in terms of presenting our results effectively.
Professional Growth
The hackathon not only provided a technical challenge but also gave me some experience in teamwork and time management! Working with my teammates offered insights into effective communication and how we all worked together as a team. Not only that, but I managed to meet new people!
The Reward
Beyond all the innovation and learning that went with attending RGU Hack 2024, our efforts were rewarded with a prize – with my team taking home a drone!
I am so grateful and loved attending the event! Looking forward to next year!
A Career in Computing
If you like the sound of Zuhaib’s experience, why not follow his lead and pursue a career in computing? Our undergraduate pathway at ICRGU leads onto two exciting degrees at Robert Gordon University: BSc (Hons) Computer Science and BSc (Hons) Cyber Security.
