Celebrating Women in STEM Day 2026

Today, we’re sharing the incredible achievements of women in Science, Tech, Engineering, and Maths.

At ICRGU, one of our biggest goals is to inspire more women to enter STEM fields. By championing these career paths, we’re helping to close the gender pay gap and bring fresh ideas into the industry. When we actively encourage women in science, we’re contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future for everyone.

Scottish Role Models

Living in Aberdeen, we’re surrounded by the legacy of magnificent Scottish women all around us. You may have already heard of these trailblazers; female STEM leaders who made some incredible discoveries:

Mary Somerville (1780-1872)

Known as the ‘Queen of Science,’ she was a polymath and astronomer. She was so influential that the word ‘scientist’ was actually coined to describe her!

Professor Anne Glover (1956-present)

A modern-day hero right here in Aberdeen. She’s a world-renowned molecular biologist at the University of Aberdeen and served as the first Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the European Commission.

Khadijah’s Story

The future of STEM is being formed by a whole host of international students. We recently spoke with Khadijah, one of our First Year Computer Science students from Nigeria. Here’s her story:

Growing up in Nigeria, Khadijah originally planned to become a doctor. Although she found that she was drawn to maths, physics, and technology in high school. After exploring different types of engineering, she discovered a passion for software and this led her all the way to Aberdeen to study Computer Science at ICRGU.

Her experience so far has been incredibly enriching. Between the supportive team at ICRGU, her lecturers, and her new classmates, she has found a community that makes learning truly enjoyable. Even stressful moments leading up to exams and big presentations, she’s noticed herself growing both academically and personally.

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science ✨

In secondary school, I realised I was more drawn to Maths, Physics, and Technology. Exploring Engineering, I discovered my passion for software – which led me to choose Computer Science.
